The following enumeration describes the six types of metadata blocks. Shadow blocks contain the previous copy of the metadata that was written, and by using the dump count in the record header, can be used to restore previously known good data in case of torn writes. This is due to shadow blocks, which are yet another technique used for consistency. Three metadata records were defined above, yet six metadata blocks exist (and each metadata block only contains one record).
